Ask us about animal adaptations!

Life Science Discoveries!

This month, scientists have been discovering the exciting world of animal adaptations. We have looked closely at animal parts and functions. We have seen the magic that nature has created in order to sustain animal survival. We have even seen how humans can copy nature to solve our own big problems. We call this bio-mimicry! Check out the learning and questioning we have done this May!

Super Animals
We made "super animals" that could survive in different environments because of their special parts and adaptations!

Bugworks!
We had a visit from Bugworks! We got to see and touch real insects and bugs! We could observe the animal adaptations in action!

Camouflage Experiment!
Can you tell how many moths are on the trees? We had a hard time too! Camouflage helps animals to hide from food, and also helps them blend in to catch food! Predators and prey use camouflage adaptations!

Why are bird beaks shaped differently?
Some birds have round beaks and some have small pointed beaks! They are different because they have adapted to eat and live in different places. A duck scoops its food from water and a wobbler picks tiny bugs out of rocky places. These animals need to survive in different environments, so their beaks look different.

Scientists have been hard at work this May!

Raising Money for a GREAT Cause!

Raising Money for a GREAT Cause!

Students in 1L really took fundraising into their own hands this weekend.

Check out the 1L students at their neighborhood lemonade stands!

They were working together to raise money for the endangered Black Jaguar!

Nice teamwork 1L!

Adopt a Jaguar!

Animal Adoption

As we culminate our study on animal adaptations, habitats and environmental protection, the students have been discussing ways to help, protect, and care for the Earth and it’s many living things. A special way we feel we can help our environment is protecting the animals that roam our planet. With that in mind, 1L has planed to adopt an endangered animal. As a class, we voted and decided to adopt a Black Jaguar through the World Wildlife Fund. Our class donation will go towards keeping the Black Jaguar safe and living free in the wild. We have decided to make a goal to donate at least $3.00 per student to the fund. But of course, any spare change is welcomed! Encourage your child to do odd jobs, help clean up the yard, make a lemonade stand! Anything to earn money for this good cause! We are so excited to play a role in helping this species live happily on our planet. Please return your donation by Friday May 25th, 2018 so that your child can be a part of our class Environmental Service Project.

Here is some information about the Black Jaguar:
The term “black panther” may be applied to several types of great cat, but in the Amazon it refers to jaguars. Not a separate species, but a rare color variant, black jaguars are powerful hunters and play a vital role within their ecosystem. Like all jaguars, these carnivores are masters of ambush, and it is thought that their dark color adaptation might aid these cats in their hunting. Unfortunately, like all jaguars, this color variation of the species is just as susceptible to threats like habitat loss.

Field Trip to the BMOS!

Student Scientists at work and play!

Students in grade 1 went on a very informative and fun trip to the Boston Museum of Science today. We have been studying Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, Life Science and Engineering and today we put all of our learning to the test.

Students were engineers, designing and redesigning models in the MOS Design Challenge Labratory

We discovered new ways to understand light and sound standards in the "Take a Closer Look" and "Light House" exhibits.

We saw the phases of the moon and the changes of the seasonal constellations at the planetarium.

It was such a great experience in learning and fun!

Please continue conversations at home by asking your leaner...
Exhibit: Cabot Lab
Essential questions to ask about students' lab experience.
How do scientists make observations?
How do scientists think about what might happen?
How do scientists adjust their questions based on their observations?
How do scientists share their findings with others?

Exhibit: Design Challenge
Essential questions to ask about scientists challenge experience.

What problem are we trying to solve?
What are the materials we have to use? Are there other limitations?
How can I improve my design to increase the quality or efficiency?
Are there multiple ways to solve the problem?

Don't forget, tomorrow is DERBY DAY! Dress to the 9s!
