Open Music Class & Teddy Bears!

Important dates this week!

Open Music Class: Thursday March 23rd  1:25 - 2:10

I wanted to let you know that this week will be our Open Music Classes, where families are invited to join our Grade 1 music classes. 

Please note that siblings who are Pre-K and younger are welcome, but siblings who are Sheehan students will not be permitted to leave their classrooms to attend.

Teddy Bear Picnic: Tuesday March 21st 

Dear Teddy Bears of 1L,

   You are cordially invited to come to school on Wednesday, March 22nd. We will be celebrating the arrival of Spring and the end of hibernation! Please remind your owners that they may only bring one teddy to school. We don’t want too many hungry bears in one room!

We watched our reading buddies perform a special Irish Step dance!

We even did a virtual shared reading with MJ today! Ask your child about our Green Eggs and Ham performance-- perfect for St. Patrick's Day!

Dr. Seuss We Love You!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Students in 1L celebrated Read Across America this week! We began a unit diving deeply into the writing and illustrations of Dr. Seuss. We discussed how his books rhyme, have deep messages, how they include made up words and many animal characters. We found out that Dr. Seuss lived in Massachusetts over 100 years ago and that his books have been helping children learn to read ever since! We also learned about his writing process, where he got his inspiration for characters and stories and how Seuss was really his middle name! 

We also had the chance to truly "read across America," by Skyping with a classroom in Washington state! We performed a shared reading of Green Eggs and Ham, and then asked the students questions about their school, the weather, and about their experiences with Dr. Seuss literature.

Student Council Updates

Spirit Day:

• This Thursday (3/2) in honor of the 20th Anniversary of NEA's Read Across America Day, please dress in red/white or like your favorite Dr. Seuss character!
  

Students in 1L are also invited to bring in their own collection of Dr. Seuss books on Thursday. Please send books in a bag and make sure that books are CLEARLY LABLED with your child's last name. As these books are often a part of our home libraries, they hold a special place in our children's hearts and truly serve as an anchor for much of their love for literacy. We will spend part of the afternoon reading and enjoying all of the fantastic things his books share with the world. We will also prepare for a skype read aloud with another school across the country to celebrate the occasion!

What a week!

Students in 1L had a fun filled week here at Sheehan! Students celebrated Valentine's Day by sending and receiving thoughtful notes and cards with their classmates. The kids were so cute and thanked their friends for spending the time to write out cards and share kind words.

Students practiced telling time on both analog and digital clocks! We even did a "clock scavenger hunt" this week!

We finished the week by participating in this month's student council service project. We decorated paper bags that will be filled with food for needy families through the Elisha project. 

We have also been studying Abraham Lincoln over the past few days in order to prepare for the President's Day holiday next week. We will be comparing and contrasting both Abe Lincoln and George Washington after the break. Over vacation, feel free to visit Brainpop and watch the biography movies on Abe Lincoln and George Washington to review and introduce information on these two important historical figures.
