Happy Chinese New Year!

Happy Chinese New Year!

1L Students continued to study family traditions this week with a lesson from Mrs. Hung about Chinese New Year! The kids made connections to other holidays, and family traditions celebrated throughout the year.
Thank you Mrs. Hung for sharing your family's culture and for the extremely generous lucky envelopes!

MLK Open Share

Check out 1L sharing their knowledge about MLK during this week's all school Open Share! We have been working on public speaking this week. A part of the Common Core Standards for first grade focuses on listening and speaking. So, students in 1L watched MLK give his "I Have a Dream Speech," discussed what good speakers do, and practiced those skills.

MLK

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Students in 1L have begun a new social studies unit on Martin Luther King Jr. this month. We have read stories and poems, sang songs, and watched videos detailing his biography and the history of the time in which he and other important Americans (Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges) lived. To extend learning at home, students may watch the video titled, "Martin Luther King Jr." on Brainpop Jr. this week for homework!

Students have been really interested in this unit, likely because they are hearing key vocabulary words (peaceful protest, march, nonviolence, injustice, etc.) and making connections with current events. Your students have lots of questions about these issues and happenings. Please encourage dinner table debate. Share your opinions and let them share theirs.

Mrs. Lazazzero

Data Collectors

Data Collection and Surveys

Students have been working hard to connect math, science and social studies over the past few weeks! We have been taking surveys on specific topics, analyzing data, making interpretations and discussing the meaning and purpose of this kind of research. Here are students in 1L asking their peers their own survey questions, drawing representations of the data and coming up with conclusion statements about their findings.

Happy New Year 1L!

The New Year brings SUPER IMPROVERS!

Students in 1L have started off the New Year with POSITIVITY! We made individualized goals that help us to succeed in first grade. Some of our goals focus on behavior, others are academic, others involve social skills. Regardless of the goals, students are working towards earning stars on their charts for proving progress towards their unique goals. The best part about this new system is that progress is only positive! We all start off as beginners, but as we move up the ladder of improvement we learn more and more! I really hope to have a Living Legend this year, so encourage your learners to KNOW their goals and be able to prove HOW they worked on their goal each day.

Positivity we have!

We have also discussed how difficult it can be to feel progress is being made on a goal. So in jumping on our school-wide spirit door contest, we used our classroom door to express how positivity, inner confidence, and "The Force," can keep us going even when it feels really hard. Each child made "I will..." statements to add to our door to show how committed they were to their goal, even if it was going to take a lot of work to accomplish!

May the Force be with you!

Love,
Mrs. L
