Getting into the groove!

September means its time to get back into the groove of school!

Student's GO books are filled with some important homework activities for the week. Choose something for a night, set the timer on the microwave for 20 minutes and have them complete what they can! If you wish to do more, that is your choice! For the writing ideas, YOU CAN WRITE THESE! I ask that you just solicit their ideas through conversations. This way I have something to use with them during Writer's Workshop.
Their Math About Me Posters can come in on Friday too! The Fundations packets are not "required" right now, but can be completed if you choose.

We will start formal homework logs after curriculum night.

Have a great week!

Mrs. L

First week with 1L Firsties!

What an amazing week 1L friends and families!

Your students were zipped and snapped and ready to fly! We started off the week with a bang and kept the momentum strong even through the final minutes, earning 10 extra minutes of recess for Monday! I am so proud of their energy and attitude, embracing the journey in learning here in first grade!

Check out some of our accomplishments in even the very first few days.

Be sure to discuss the classroom rules, how they chose to be kind and if you have time, head to the Westwood Public Library to pick up these titles!

Discuss the themes and messages of each with your kiddos throughout the Fall! It is important to continue conversations about kindness, being unique, embracing failures, and working as a team! Other Open Circle ideas will pop up throughout the year and I will be sure to let you know as we go along! If you have any questions or would like any more guidance, please let me know!

Have a restful weekend!
Love,
Mrs, L

Welcome Back!

Hello 1L students and families!

I am so excited to see you in such a short time! I can't believe it is time to start another wonderful journey in growing and learning! I can't wait to begin our work together!

Don't forget to bring your favorite book to school on the first day of school! I will bring mine too! We will use these all week. You may bring them back and forth or keep them in our special and safe, "books from home" spot in the classroom.

Also, be sure to check out our classroom wish list on Amazon as you gear up for back to school season! If you would like to make a donation to our classroom, please use this as your guide throughout the year. There are lots of mentor texts and cleaning supplies on there right now! We appreciate all of your help in advance in getting our classroom set up for the year!

Here's to the grand adventure that awaits!

Love,
Mrs. L

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!

Dear 1L Students and Families,

I wanted to extend my sincerest gratitude for your thoughtful end of the year send off! Today's kickball game, our habitat's unit, learning about story problems, writing poetry, singing about Martin Luther King Jr. and reading about Lilly, Tacky and all the rest has brought me joy that I could not possibly express! It was simply amazing going around today, asking the students to highlight memories they have had here in 1L. In true Sheehan fashion, here is the top 10! Ask your learners what their top 10, or 5 favorite memories have been tonight and tomorrow, if you haven't already! They have so much to be proud of, so much to be thankful for, so much to share with you about their experience here. Don't let their answer be, "I don't know!" It has been such an amazing year and I hope that they cherish the memories as much as I do! Use this list to help guide your conversations...

10. Getting scanners during Reader's Workshop and using them to be "Word Detectives"
9. Building Gingerbread houses
8. Reading about Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and all of the other Kevin Henkes' stories
7. Becoming rockstars and learning about sound and vibration
6. Planting a sunflower house in the OLC
5. Adopting a Panda as a class and raising money for WWF
4. Going to the New England Aquarium and seeing that cool octopus
3. Playing math games like "Make a Train" and "Sushi Math"
2. Having Reading Buddies with 3FB
1. Doing an interactive read aloud of Green Eggs and Ham, by Dr. Seuss with a school in Washington!

I have had so much fun this year and I hope that you have too.

I wish everyone the best for a sunny and restful summer! See you tomorrow, for the very last day of first grade!

Live, laugh, learn and be little...you only get one chance!

Love,
Mrs. L

Kickball MONDAY

Hi Families!

I can't believe we are wrapping up the school year next week! It is really hard to believe! Monday, we will be playing a class game of kickball! Please send your students in sneakers and clothes for playing (though, I know they would already be wearing them for PE, I wanted to make sure!). It is a surprise for the kiddos!

All the best,
Mrs. L
