Math Workshop in 1L
Students have begun learning the ins and outs of Math Workshop in 1L. We have figured out the different stations and gradually we will be adding bits and pieces to ensure that each student is practicing what he or she needs to be practicing throughout the workshop. Students move in fluid groupings across the classroom, experiencing different activities, some with partners, some using technology, some with a teacher and some independently. Differentiation strategies keeping in mind students' unique learning needs are made at each step along the way!
"Because..."
Accountable talk is a HUGE part of our math curriculum and 1L. We use math talk "speech bubbles" to enforce this vocabulary and language use during partner games and IPAD times.
When you are working with your children at home, give them the targeted language we expect by providing a sentence frame.
For example: There are _______ disks altogether.
or
How many more/less to make _____ disks?
Then ask them, "How many do you have?"
Then the children will be able to answer using the targeted vocabulary.
Finally, encourage them to use the word "because..." to articulate their thinking.
When you ask "How many do you have?" They might say, "7".
Don't let them stop there!
Just gesture with sparkle fingers downward and they know they are expected to say, "because..."
A well articulated answer could be...
"I have 7 because I see 5 blue and 2 yellow and I know 5 and 2 more make 7"
or
"I have 7 because I saw these 2 arrangements of 3's. 2 arrangements of 3s make 6 and 1 more makes 7"
"Match my cube thing"
"Math by Myself"
"Compare dots"
Have fun being Grade 1 mathematicians!
Love,
Mrs. L
