Field Trip to the BMOS!

Student Scientists at work and play!

Students in grade 1 went on a very informative and fun trip to the Boston Museum of Science today. We have been studying Earth and Space Science, Physical Science, Life Science and Engineering and today we put all of our learning to the test.

Students were engineers, designing and redesigning models in the MOS Design Challenge Labratory

We discovered new ways to understand light and sound standards in the "Take a Closer Look" and "Light House" exhibits.

We saw the phases of the moon and the changes of the seasonal constellations at the planetarium.

It was such a great experience in learning and fun!

Please continue conversations at home by asking your leaner...
Exhibit: Cabot Lab
Essential questions to ask about students' lab experience.
How do scientists make observations?
How do scientists think about what might happen?
How do scientists adjust their questions based on their observations?
How do scientists share their findings with others?

Exhibit: Design Challenge
Essential questions to ask about scientists challenge experience.

What problem are we trying to solve?
What are the materials we have to use? Are there other limitations?
How can I improve my design to increase the quality or efficiency?
Are there multiple ways to solve the problem?

Don't forget, tomorrow is DERBY DAY! Dress to the 9s!

Mrs. L

We speak for the trees!

After spending two weeks learning about caring for the environment, our class celebrated by joining the Lorax to speak for the trees for as long as we live!

April Shines!

Mystery Reader Fun!

Exploring communication!
First graders were asked by the local toy store to design and develop a cup phone that worked without batteries! We made cup phones to further develop our understanding of sound and how it is created through vibrations.

 Lio Lionni Author Study

Students have been going on adventures with characters all month. We have been thinking about strategies readers use to understand the books they encounter! Retelling, stoping and thinking about what is happening, acting out the important parts. We have been using Lio Lionni's texts as our backdrop and in our final celebration we discussed how this author illustrator used different artistic techniques in each of his books to make his character adventures even more exciting and powerful. These pictures highlight our class trying some of the techniques on our own!

Have a fantastic vacation!

Cup Phones!

Cup Phone Investigation

This THURSDAY, students in 1L will be doing an investigation that challenges us to transmit messages through sound! We have been using light and Morse Code already! It has been a blast! In order to do this, we would love some metal cans. If you have a soup can (really any metal can will do!) or two, please send them in with a hole already punched in the bottom!

THANK YOU!
Love,
Mrs. L
